Reception Music Planning

Music in Reception will not be timetabled as regular units to be taught but will arise from the continuous provision format of learning. The teacher may choose to use some activities or resources from the foundation stage of Music Express if appropriate.

Activities will be self-initiated or structured from play based exploration or will be part of daily whole class based carpet sessions and will include:

Listening carefully to rhymes and songs, paying attention to how they sound.

Learning rhymes, poems and songs.

Combining different movements with ease and fluency.

Exploring, using and refining a variety of artistic effects to express their ideas and feelings.

Creating collaboratively, sharing ideas, resources and skills.

Listening attentively, moving to and talking about music, expressing their feelings and responses.

Singing in a group or on their own, increasingly matching the pitch and following the melody.  Exploring and engaging in music making and dance, performing solo or in groups.

Singing a range of well-known nursery rhymes and songs.

Performing songs, rhymes, poems and stories with others, and (when appropriate) trying to move in time with music.

  • Reception Children also join in with Year 1 and 2 for weekly singing sessions with the music lead. These sessions teach new songs, practise for performances and will cover skill building activities in the key areas of rhythm, pitch and beat.
